How to Enable Google 2-Step Verification

Purpose

This page explains how to enable (enroll in) Google 2-Step Verification (2SV) for a Google workspace account.

 

Introduction

Google 2-Step Verification adds an additional layer of protection by requiring, as Google says, something you know (your password) AND something you have (your mobile phone) to access your account from a new device. Before you Begin:

2SV for Departments:

  • If you are enabling 2SV for a shared department account, you may need to enable Gmail Delegation or request a Shared Drive. See our 2SV for Departments FAQ for more information.

Procedure

Protect your account with 2-Step Verification Each time you sign in to your Google Account, you'll need your password and a verification code. Learn more field. Add an extra layer of security Enter your password and a unique verification code that's sent to your phon.   • Enter your password and click Next.

  • If asked to set up Google app prompt,
    • Click Show more options.
    • Select Text message or voice call.
    • Otherwise, continue to the next step.
    • Note: You may use Google app prompt, but we recommend text or voice calling in case you lose access to your Google apps.

Show more options field. Click the show  more options field. Security Key button A small physical device used for signing in Text message or voice call button Get codes by text message or phone call. Click the Text message or voice call button.

  • Type your phone number in the phone number text box.
  • Select Text message or Phone call.
  • Click NEXT.

Let's set up your phone What phone number do you want to use? Country flag dropdown field text, string, or integer field. Click the text field and enter your phone number. "Goole will only use this number fo raccount security. Don't use a Google Voice number. Message and data rates may apply. How do you want to get codes?" Text message button or checkbox Phone call button or checkbox. Click the button or checkbox that is your preferred method of receiving 2-Step Verification messages.   • Either open the text message or answer the phone call and retrieve the verification code.
  • Enter the verification code in the text box and click NEXT.

Confirm that it works Google just sent a text message with a verification code to (Your phone number) Enter the code text box Didn't get it? Resend field BACK button NEXT button

  • Click TURN ON.

It worked! Turn on 2-Step Verification? Now that you've seen how it works, do you want to turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account (your gmail address)? TURN ON button
